Current Award Project
Each year Girls Scouts, 5th grade and up show us exactly how passion, teamwork and commitment can change the world. Below are the ongoing award projects of Kenilworth Girl Scouts.
The Hive Project
These Girl Scouts noticed that LGBQIA+ youth and minorities experience significantly higher rates of bullying. This puts them at an increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicide.
To showcase and reinforce the notion that there is a safe place for all and support for all, they created The Hive Project, a website and database of mental health resources that can accessed by teens seeking a place to turn in dark times. We are working to get the word out through meets and greets and partnerships with school clubs and organizations.
We have also started a line of merch, proceeds from which will be donated to teen mental health charities
*8th Grade Girl Scouts: Liana C, Valentina C & Anna K.
Tweet Retreat
More than 1/5 of bird species populate urban areas, such as our town. Due to continual development and overpopulation increasingly birds are unable to find suitable homes.
Tweet retreat is an educational program focusing on the need to conserve our resources, how to use every day products to help birds make nests and how to build and install functional bird boxes ensuring our feathered friends will have a place to stay for years to come.
7th graders Katarina D & Kaylee W.
Joyful Creations: Memory Matters
7th Graders: Danna V., Kayla M. & Ariana P.
Many seniors are affected by memory issues. Most people have a friend, family member or loved one that has suffered from memory issues.
Joyful Creations seeks to tackle memory loss in seniors through fun, creative workshops with seniors providing key mentorship and socialization as well as creating memory boxes and cabinets which contain tools and activities seniors can do on their own or with friends and family to stimulate their brain and prevent memory loss.
Also, as many people begin to loose their memory, they start to fidget. We will be creating sensory, fidget blankets for seniors to use to enhance these skills and to help keep them focused.
The Fairy Pollination Station
5th grade Girl Scouts Bronze Award.
Pollinator gardens play a vital role in our ecosystem, they use native plants and give food (nectar and pollen) for plants and species that need them. They are made of plants native to the area.
We decided to teach people about the importance of pollinator gardens by planting a pollinator garden and creating a fairy trail within it so that students can go through the fairy trail and learn about the importance of native plants to our ecosystem.
Our school garden has a place for outdoor learning and we hope our fairy garden can be used by teachers when teaching science lessons.
7th graders: Brielle T, Marlowe C and Hannah W. Mindfulness Matters
For many children school can be a stressful environment. One of the most effective ways to combat stress and improve focus is through the use of breathing techniques, meditation and yoga.
We will be developing and implementing a program for elementary school students to lean and use breathing techniques and mindfulness techniques. We will also be hosting kids yoga classes where kids can move and learn the positive impact of mindfulness.
